Notes

Chip Berlet is often cited as an inspiration by many modern Antifa activists for the work they do. He is one of the early figures in the "hate monitor" scene who got his start with "New Left" activism in the 1960s, eventually joining the ostensibly Communist National Lawyers Guild. Berlet then joined Political Research Associates, a Massachusetts based nonprofit, dedicated to monitoring what they perceive to be the "far right". The Southern Poverty Law Center has published articles where he is credited as the author, though they describe him as a "senior analyst for Political Research Associates rather than an SPLC employee. Despite it's small size PRA seems to be well connected and influential. One Article Describes Berlet as: "A self-described Christian — and a Marxist — Chip Berlet has earned the right to rest on his laurels. " He also co-authored a book with Antifa "intellectual" Matthew N. Lyons who has written numerous books popular with the Antifa crowd such as Three Way Fight.
