Derrick Acan Sanderlin, born Jul. '92, participated in a George Floyd riot in May 2020 in San Jose with his wife Cayla. His wife wanted to leave but he forced her to stay. He positioned himself as a human meat shield between two rioters holding paint cans and the police. An officer ordered Sanderlin to move, warning him he would be shot if he didn't comply. Sanderlin ignored the order and was hit in the groin by non-lethal ammo. Although the ammo was non-lethal, it was nearly lethal to his nuts and he underwent emergency surgery on a ruptured testicle. Doctors later broke the news to him that he may not be able to have children. Sanderlin sued the city and settled out of court. Sanderlin formerly worked as a community organizer but now works as a barista. He also volunteers with a team that provides procedural justice and implicit bias training to classes at the San Jose Police Department Academy. He's an amateur musician who wrote and performed a song titled "Bomb Threat".
