Willis attended the Charlottesville UTR counter protest while a student at UVA. He was one of the plaintiffs in a civil suit against Unite the Right organizers even though the left started the violence at the demonstration. He apparently wasn't actually injured, just traumatized by the car incident. Willis was a student in poly-sci and urban planning at the time of the rally. He was also secretary of the Black Students Association.
