Notes

Freddy Lee Smith, aka Zachary Runningwolf, aka Zachary Runningwolf Brown (DOB: 02/09/63) is a long-time Berkeley activist and self-proclaimed "indigenous elder" who sat in a grove of oak trees in 2006 to protect the trees from removal. The trees were in the way of a planned University of California football training facility. Given the sorry state of Cal's football program I think the facility deserved the right of way. He ran unsuccessfully for mayor the same year as the tree sitting action. Earlier, in 2001, he ran cross country from San Francisco to Philadelphia in support of convicted cop killer Mumia Abu-Jamal. Smith was also active in the Occupy Oakland movement in the early 2010s and was seen burning an American flag. In 2019, Berkeley's mayor obtained a restraining order against Smith after Smith issued death threats against the mayor. He was later convicted of vandalizing a synagogue in 2020. While most left-wingers are anti-Semitic, Smith was just much more direct in expressing his hatred of Jews than his radical peers. Smith has an associates degree and attended culinary school. He was adopted by a white couple but later reconnected with the Blackfoot tribe and was named an elder. I guess the tribe was hard up for leadership. He usually goes by the surname Runninigwolf but as best I can tell, his legal name is Freddy Smith. https://archive.ph/u7tQC, https://archive.ph/tCzkn, https://archive.ph/qVNah, https://archive.ph/RQYIu
