Gilbertson is a radical animal rights activist and a member of Direct Action Everywhere (DxE). He disrupted the trophy presentation at the Preakness horse race in 2021. He screamed, "No more death races!" on live TV. Also in 2021, he traveled to Smithfield Food's headquarters to protest pig shit. In July 2022, travelled with two other DxE members to New York and disrupted the annual hot dog eating contest. Gilbertson was put in a choke hold by a hot dog eating champ.
