In the years prior to her arrest, she spent much of her time sailing and racing a yacht, Manta Ray, that she co-owned. She was a chair of the Corinthian Yacht Club (CYC) of Seattle Large Boat Racing Fleet, probably a first for a radical. I assume she had to sell her yacht in order to pay the restitution. Kolar was apparently radicalized while attending the University of Colorado (Surprise!). Her first "action" appears to have been harassment of Northwest Native Americans who legally hunted whales using traditional methods. She has several arrests for trespassing, disturbing the peace and interference in the late '90s and early 2000s that may be protest related. She's trained as a software engineer and was often the computer security expert for the groups she worked with but she now runs a dog training business call PAWS Training Center. After questioning by Wisconsin police about a raid on a mink farm, Young split with Samuel and went to ground. He wound up on the FBI Most Wanted list but evaded capture until 2005. He was charged with animal enterprise terrorism, criminal trespassing and extortion by interfering with interstate commerce. Samuel testified against Young at their trial but surprisingly, they received the same sentence and Young was ordered to pay less restitution. After his release from prison in 2007, he traveled extensively, speaking regularly at animal-rights conferences where he calls for aggressive direct action, maintaining websites including the Animal Liberation Frontline, and pursuing numerous writing projects.
